Ask Dr. Fling

Q: My dog's doctor recently prescribed a supplement containing glucosamine for my Lab's arthritis. It has seemed to be helpful, but it's really expensive. Since starting this medicine for my dog, I seem to see this stuff everywhere! I've seen it in dog foods and even at discount stores and the health food stores. Is there any advantage to one product over the other, and would it do any harm to buy the cheapest one?

A: Glucosamine containing products fall under the category of “neutraceuticals", or "supplements" rather than "drugs", so unfortunately, these substances are not under strict regulation as would be the case with the FDA. Because of this poor regulation of glucosamine containing supplements, the consumer has no assurance of the quality, absorption or quantity of the active ingredients! For specific recommendations on products with strong results in independent testing, see your pet's veterinarian.
