Q:
I've been wanting to adopt a dog, but have never had any experience
with one before. A friend suggested that I consider adopting a retired
racing greyhound, rather than going to a breeder for a purebred dog.
Are they good pets, or are they too hyperactive or big to have as
house pets?
A:
Greyhounds can make excellent pets.
I have cared for a large number of greyhounds, including some owned
by family members. I find the breed as a whole to be very loving and
gentle. Many people falsely assume that greyhounds would spend their
days racing through the house, when more commonly, they can found
lounging on the couch. Perhaps these dogs are so grateful to have
a home of their own that they try extra hard to be perfect pets! My
biggest caution is to be certain that any greyhound you adopt is well
socialized to cats or small dogs. Some greyhounds who have been
trained at the track instinctively think of small animals as prey.
A
good veterinary examination would
be wise too, since some
racing greyhounds are heavily parasitized and many are prone to dental
disease.
