Ask Dr. Fling

Q: Next month I will be getting a new puppy. What things should I do to ease the transition into his new home?

A: New puppies are needy, a lot like human babies. The first few days, especially, of separation from his mother may be difficult for a new puppy. Particularly at night, puppies will feel lonely and cry. To help your new canine companion feel more secure, use a crate or box as his bed. Fill the bed with blankets, stuffed animals and a hot water bottle to simulate the cozy environment he had with his litter-mates and mother. Also, it is helpful to have the soothing sounds of a softly playing radio or a ticking clock to ease a new puppy’s loneliness. Usually, after two or three nights, most puppies will
adapt well to their new home.
