Ask Dr. Fling

Q: My husband and I are expecting a baby in July. Up until now, our American Eskimo dog "Snowy", has been the only "baby" in the house. Snowy is good-natured and I don't think she'd do anything to hurt the baby, but lately everyone seems to be telling me stories about dogs that have hurt babies. Are there any precautions I can take to make the transition easier?

A: Start working with Snowy now to help her prepare for the new arrival. First, begin reviewing basic obedience commands like "sit", "stay" and "come." Also, make sure that she understands "down" and knows not to jump up on you. These simple obedience skills will be of the utmost importance once the baby arrives. In addition, it is helpful to engage in "baby activities" using a doll, intermittently asking Snowy to do her obedience commands, then rewarding her when she performs in an appropriate way. This will help her to associate the baby, once home, with positive things. You may also consider a consultation and training with a pet behaviorist.
