Ask Dr. Fling

Q: I’ve tried everything to get rid of my pet’s fleas! I’ve washed all the bedding, sprayed, had him dipped, done everything at the same time, but Bosco is still scratching.

A: Fleas can be a serious bother for pets, leading to dramatic skin infections, itching, and hair loss, as you have seen. While you cite good methods of flea control, some of the difficulty may exist due to untreated skin infections, or the need for treatment with antihistamines or antiinflamitories to ease the skin irritation. Your pets' doctor can make the best recommendations on medications to relieve your pets' suffering. Additionally, if despite regular flea prevention methods, fleas are still being seen, treatment of your yard and house may be needed, or an alternative flea prevention product which is less
likely to be bathed off may be suggested.
