Ask Dr. Fling

Q: My neighbor has two dogs that live outside. I'm worried that the dogs will suffer from the coming cold weather. I don't think my neighbor would think of letting these poor dogs in the house, so I'm wondering if I can gently make some good suggestions on ways to shelter these dogs. What do you recommend for dogs that live outside?

A:
Certainly, when temperatures are cold, it is ideal for pets to be inside and well sheltered. Your neighbor might surprise you and be open to this idea if it is politely suggested. Also, it may be possible to shelter the dogs in the garage or with a well insulated dog house. "Dogloo" brand dog houses are particularly well insulated and are appreciated by many dogs. Additionally, blankets or straw can be used for bedding to conserve warmth, or "dog safe" indoor-outdoor heating pads, available from many pet stores, can be used. Thankfully, the two dogs have each other to help stay warm.
